01. Nyglyptoteket
Copenhagen, Denmark
Spring 2023
Project Description:
Time Frame: 7 Weeks
Team: Solo
Status: Hypothetical
The aim of the project was to create a museum extension for the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in central Copenhagen. This extension was designed to showcase rotating exhibitions of the Carlsberg Foundation's vast array of contemporary art, in order to compliment the existing museum's catalog of classical art. The extension's design juxtaposes the linear circulation of the existing Glyptotek with an open floor plan that is littered with a series of ramps, allowing for free movement and the ability to display a plethora of mediums.
Located in the center of Copenhagen, the Glyptotek is seen by thousands of passersby and visitors of the adjacent Tivoli Gardens. Therefore, the an interesting facade was required to attract visitors and differentiate the extension from the existing museum. Brick cladding was chosen in order to continue the material language of the existing Glyptotek. However, the Nyglptoteket draws intrigue through its large exterior concrete walls that house the exhibitions inside. They protrude onto existing walking paths, inviting people to large full height windows to take a look inside.

Peeking inside reveals a system of ramps and ultra-thick walls that create a sense of grandiose amongst the art. Upon entry, guests are met with an immediate crescendo, but it cannot be accessed from the same platform. Instead, guests must navigate through a system of ramps to reach their original target, which provides a sightline down through the entire Glyptotek. This forces the guest to get lost within the art, rather than skipping to the extension's conclusion.
